Bulgaria Identity

Visual Identity Design

Overview

This university module focused on enhancing a country’s image through creative strategy and a new visual identity. I chose Bulgaria for its proud, rich history and diverse traditions, often described as a cultural melting pot of Greek, Slavic, Ottoman, and Persian influences. Inspired by this heritage, I created a custom variable font that represents Bulgarian pride and its unique blend of diverse history and culture.

My initial direction involved exploring patterns from my visual inspiration to create uniquely crafted letterform variations. These designs drew influence from the craftsmanship found in architecture and traditional Bulgarian clothing.

Visual inspiration showcasing patterns from Bulgarian architecture, clothing, and packaging, along with the Bulgaria Outdoor Ethnographic Museum logotype, inspired by traditional Bulgarian craftsmanship.

The early development of my second and final direction explores diversity and Bulgarian pride through chunky typography and varying type scales. This route blends existing fonts with a custom-made display typeface. Inspired by Wolff Olins’ New York City identity, inspired by New York pride, my design captures similar spirit of cultural identity and bold expression

The typographic poster concept reflects my theme of diversity through a mix of type widths and scales, with some letterforms incorporating different imagery.
